Bangladesh Freedom Party is a registered political party in Bangladesh. On 15 August 1975, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family were assassinated by some military officers. Some of the assassins, such as Captain (later Lt. Col.) Khandaker Abdur Rashid , Col. Syed Faruk Rahman and Major Bazlul Huda, later formed the party in the 1960s.
On November 3, 1975, Bangabandhu's assassins left the country on a special flight. They first went to Bangkok via Yangon. From there he took refuge in Libya via Pakistan. Several killers from Libya were later assigned to various missions in Bangladesh. However, from 1975 to 1990, Bangabandhu's assassins chose Libya as a safe haven.
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi under the patronage of Lt. Colonel Khandaker Abdur Rashid and Colonel Syed Faruk Rahman formed the Freedom Party on 3 August 1986 at the Sheraton Hotel in Dhaka. But from the beginning, they both had the status of VIP guests in Libya. Khandaker Abdur Rashid set up a construction company in Tripoli. Gaddafi paid him to build that company. And Syed Farooq Rahman opened a manpower export company in Libya. That company took manpower from Bangladesh to Libya.
The Freedom Party was run with Muammar Gaddafi's money. Syed Faruk Rahman and Khandaker Abdur Rashid formed Bangladesh-Libya Friendship Society. Brother Gaddafi Kindergarten School was also opened in Dhaka. The two assassins also translated Gaddafi's Green Book into Bengali and distributed it free of charge to the public.
Other assassins of Bangabandhu used to meet in Libya centering on the murderers Syed Farooq Rahman and Khandaker Abdur Rashid. Apart from Tripoli in Libya, the two assassins had business offices in Benghazi. Even there, murderers from other countries would meet safely.
According to a 1996 UNHRC report, the party did not make much of an impact in Bangladesh's political arena but is currently active on various social networking sites.
According to a 2000 report by the Bangladesh Police , Mehnaz Rashid, daughter of Khandaker Abdur Rashid , is working to unite the party. He was the Freedom Party's candidate in the 2001 and 2008 parliamentary elections from Chandina in Comilla .
The current chairman of the party is Syed Tariq Rahman, son of Colonel Farooq, who lives in Sydney.
