Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) is the management and regulatory body for postgraduate education and training in medicine in Bangladesh. The college has played a unique role in creating specialists in various branches of medical science who are working as medical teachers, consultants and specialists. The college was the then East Pakistan branch of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSP) of Pakistan.













History 





Although the college was established in 1972, the college was established in 1972 by the order of the President with existing Fellows, Founding Fellows and in 1982 at MohakhaliDhaka. All CPSP followers who were from Bangladesh (East Pakistan) were admitted as founding fellows of the college. National Professor Nurul Islam played a special role in the establishment. Kazi Shamsul Haque was the first principal of the college.





Background 





The government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh formed an ad hoc committee of the college in 1972 with Professor KS Haque as its president. Followers of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan were admitted as Founding Fellows. The first test was held in July 1972.

Subscriptions are given in the subjects of Subscription, Medical, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics. Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Radiology-Imaging, Radiotherapy, Dermatology and Venereology. Dental Surgery, Forensic Medicine, Family Medicine and Clinical Pathology.





The exams follow a meticulous assessment and scoring system that is unique to this college. It helps to produce fellows and members with a high level of expertise to match the needs of the medical profession. The acceptance / defense of a study taken by the candidates for the final fellowship examination is also required. In order to optimize the assessment, OSPE-OSCE has introduced the second part of the partial replacement of the conventional oral and practical examinations in the preliminary and final examinations.





Programs: Under the CPD program, the goal of the regular program is to update Fellow Knowledge and increase capacity. Workshops, seminars and meetings on various topics of interest and contemporary are also held.





Exchanges of various specialized candidates exist between BCPS and Royal Colleges in the United Kingdom and with regional countries such as PakistanIndiaSri LankaSingaporeThailand and Saudi Arabia.





Awards 





The college offers fellowships and membership awards. Fellowships are awarded in three ways: Fellowship through regular examination, Fellowship without examination and Honorary Fellowship. Membership is awarded for passing the prescribed examination. So far 111 people have been awarded fellowships without examination and another 18 have received honorary fellowships. So far 6 foreign nationals have received such fellowships. The total number of fellowships and memberships given through regular examinations is 4173 and 2295 respectively.





Foreign recognition 





Qualifications offered by the college are recognized for registration, employment, higher education and training in different countries of the world. Since 2010, the Royal College of Physicians UK has been approving the college's Fellows to allow them to pass the Part-I exam and to enter the Part-II exam directly. The only fellowship in BCPS recognized in the UK is in Anesthetics. The BCPS College of Physicians and Surgeons has a similar relationship with Pakistan.
